How to classify an unlabeled cotton before choosing a garment.

The four fabric facts that matter most

Structure tells you whether the fabric is woven or knitted. Stretch affects fit and construction. Weight changes how much body a garment has. Drape describes whether fabric hangs close to the body or holds its own shape.

Fiber content matters, but it does not answer every pattern question. Two cotton fabrics can behave very differently when one is fine lawn and the other is firm twill. Whenever possible, use the more specific fabric name and add width, weight and stretch in the finder.

Planning rule: never treat a general yardage range as a cutting guarantee. Size, view, width, nap, shrinkage, print matching and layout all change the amount needed.
